Genetical Study of Male Sterility in Carrots , Daucus carota L.

Abstract
The inheritance mode of male sterility in carrots, Daucus carota L. was studied using four different sources of male sterility; three of them were brown anther types and the rest was petaloid type. Segregation ratios of male sterile and male fertile were analyzed from 527 Fl combinations and 93 backcrosses. The results are as follows:
1. The inheritance mode of the male sterility quite differed with different materials used.
2. The petaloid type found in cv. Spartan Bonus and the brown anther type in cv. Shin Kurota I were controlled by a same genetical system, which means that their male sterility seemed to be controlled by the interaction of a cytoplamic factor, two duplicate dominant nuclear genes for male sterility and two complementary dominant nuclear genes for restorer.
3. Although the inheritance mode of the other two brown anther types found in cv. Shin Kurota II and New King Chantenap, respectively, could not be clearly elucidated from this experiment, it was very evident that the inheritance mode of these sources were different from that of above mentioned.
